If you believe that you might have a legal case it is a good idea to seek a legal consult before pursuing any action. Many law firms offer a free consultation so make sure that you take advantage of this. This allows you to try out a couple different law firms before deciding on a lawyer.

The lawyer you choose to represent you should be one that is easily reachable by phone. Being unable to reach a lawyer is a common complaint. You don't need to wonder if it's because they're golfing.

Imagine taking on a lawyer who is about to enter court for the first time. That's what will happen if you take a general lawyer into a case where a specializing lawyer is a better bet. Ask any lawyer you know for their recommendations, and you'll be pleased with the outcome.

Make sure that you have a decent interaction with any attorney before you invest any money. You may have to spend a good amount of time with your lawyer, so it is important that you choose one that you don't have any issues working with. Take the time to sit down with any potential attorneys and see if you get a good feel for them.

Ask your lawyer for an estimate when you decide they're the one for you. If they say no, walk away immediately. Even if they just give you a range and explain what makes a case more or less expensive, that is good enough. Make sure to get your fee agreement in writing!

When looking for a lawyer, time is significant. However, it is not so important that you hire the first lawyer you meet. Always consider more than one lawyer. You need to make sure they have the skills you need, that you can afford them, and they will fight for your best interests.

Do not underestimate the importance of your lawyer's personality. An aggressive lawyer can be an advantage but an experienced and confident lawyer could help you win your case too. You should meet with different lawyer and find one who has the kind of personality and philosophy you need here for your case.

Ask those you know for their lawyer recommendations. You may be surprised at the results here! People you would never have expected to know a good lawyer, may have the best connection of all. It's this word of mouth recommendation that means the most, so take it seriously and make this your first step.

If you need a specialized lawyer, ask the lawyers you are considering about their specialized training. There are seminars and additional classes lawyers can take to learn more about a specific issue. For instance, lawyers who are qualified to help you with filing for bankruptcy should be members of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.

Be aware of the fact that every lawyer is covered by malpractice insurance in case they are responsible for an error that costs you in some way. This is helpful to you because your lawyer doesn't want to have to pay high malpractice fees, so he or she will strive to adhere to the letter of the law. Keep the faith that your lawyer has only your best interest in mind.

Once you have made the decision to hire a particular attorney, ask if the office employs a legal assistant who could work with you. Many times a legal assistant has the ability to effectively represent a client. This shared arrangement can greatly reduce the full cost of your legal representation.

A jury awarded the family of two drunk driving victims more than $301 billion, but they don't anticipate seeing any of it

(CNN)A jury in Texas has awarded the largest-ever personal injury compensation in the country to a family who lost two people killed by a drunk driver.

The sum is symbolic, lawyers for the family say, but the eye-popping size of the judgment is meant to send a message about the consequences of drunken driving.

Tamra Kay Kindred was on her way home after picking up her 16-year-old granddaughter, Aujuni Tamay Anderson, from her job at Cici's Pizza on November 12, 2017. She was driving through an intersection in Corpus Christi, Texas, when a man ran a red light and hit them, according to a complaint filed in 2018.

Kindred and Anderson died in the crash, along with the driver of the other car, Joshua Delbosque, who was intoxicated.

The family of Kindred and Anderson sued the bar Delbosque had been at for negligence, alleging bartenders there overserved him. The lawsuit also named the bar's owner.

After a short trial that began Monday, a jury said the family of Kindred and Anderson is entitled to just over $301 billion, according to court documents, making it the largest personal injury award in US history. Previously, the largest amount ever awarded to a family in a personal injury award was $150 billion in 2011.
